Data and Network Solutions: The Simple Explanation

We’re passionate about network and data solutions here at TelDesigns. Having said that, for those who don’t live this stuff every day, techspeak like “fiber optic,” “multi-protocol label switching,” and “synchronous optical networking” (among many, many others) tends to cause a lot of blank stares—if not tears of frustration and/or boredom.

So, to make it easy for you to understand what network and data solutions are and why they’re important for your business, here’s a simple analogy.

Your Telecom is Like a City Transportation Network

Stay with us here.

You can think of your network as the streets, highways, bike lanes, and commuter train tracks of a bustling metropolitan area. The cars, buses, and trains that use that network is your data. Data and network solutions are all about:

  • Making sure you have enough “roadway” (or bandwidth) to handle the volume of data traffic (applications, server requests, voice calls, etc.) you need to send. If the network can’t handle the data, you end up with congestions, slowdowns, and crashes. Think US-31 through Grand Haven on a sunny Saturday.
  • Making sure traffic gets routed properly. If you know the side roads (or are quick with Google Maps!), you can sometimes bypass a jam-packed Interstate without losing too much time—all while your less-clever compatriots can only sit and wait. Likewise, in computer networking there are often many paths that data can take to get from the its source to its destination. Having lots of bandwidth does no good if everybody’s data is using the same path; intelligent routing algorithms will use the network more efficiently and keep traffic moving smoothly for everyone.

So more is better, right? Just rip out that old cable and pop in a fancy fiber optic network and be done with it, right?

Not so fast.

Don’t get us wrong; we love fiber and recommend it frequently for many of our business clients. But for other companies, that would be the equivalent of putting a 10-lane superhighway between Nunica and Borculo. Yes, you need your network to scale with you as you grow, but there’s no sense in buying way more bandwidth than you’ll ever need, when a two-lane county road will handle the traffic just as well at a fraction of the cost.

You can see the difficult balance. Err too far on one side, and you’ve got a network that moves like Chicago at rush hour (which is to say, not at all). Err on the other, and you could end up wasting a lot of money unnecessarily. What to do?

That one’s easy: call TelDesigns. We’ll help you get the network and data solutions you need at the best possible price. Plus, we’ll provide ongoing support long after the point of sale. Because we take the time to get to know you and your business, we can use our knowledge of the telecom marketplace to improve your productivity AND save you money.
